why we’re all on the pursuit of flyness

Like I said in my previous post, the pursuit of flyness is a name that I came up with hastily. But, lowkey, the more I say it aloud, the more I like it. Because even if the name isn’t as cool as I thought it was when I first bought it, I realized that the pursuit of flyness isn’t just a name, it’s a part of who I am.

Sike nah, let me stop being fake deep.

But seriously, as a black millennial trying to define my place in this world, I feel like I’m constantly on the pursuit of flyness. By fire by force, I always have to be up to date on the latest trends. From shoes, to clothes (shoutout to Fashion Nova), to this new TikTok sh*t, it’s impossible to not feel that unspeakable pressure to stay current. I mean, I respect those people who have the power to rise above it all, but for most of us, that’s not realistic. Because no matter how hard one may try, it is impossible to avoid external social influences. You are going to be confronted by that younger sibling, dumb co-worker, or targeted social media ad that brings your focus back to pop culture against your will.

I personally get inundated with the latest and greatest trends because of my lifestyle. I live in the DMV and I actively engage with pages that pique these interests on social media. So, naturally I have an affinity for black/fly/’whatever you want to call’ this culture.

Now, don’t get it twisted, I’m not a clout chaser, a culture vulture, or someone who gives in to peer pressure/feels like I have to keep up with the Joneses. I don’t just subscribe to the culture to stay relevant or to gain social capital. I buy shoes, dress fly, and get on social media because I genuinely enjoy it. These are the authentic ways that I choose to express myself.

But, life moves quickly! This culture evolves, grows, and expands really fast. All I can do is try to keep up, and pick and choose what speaks to me as an individual, but at my own pace. As such, I’m always curating new things to do, and finding ways to reinvent myself based on the new content or trends that I see. That is what makes me feel like I’m constantly on the pursuit of flyness.

see what I did there?

what does this have to do with travel?

No, I did not forget that this was a travel blog! I’m building up to it!

The point of my little think piece up there was to tee up the idea that the latest and greatest trend for most people, especially amongst black millennials, is TRAVEL! No matter which social mediums you use, or who you interact with, we all know somebody who went somewhere cool and posted about. Well, at least they did before #TheRona.

And, despite how you may feel about these kinds of posts, I think it’s fair to say that we all want to do the same thing. We all want to live our best lives in some shape or form. I'm not saying that we all dream of going to Bali, Dubai, or any other popular tourist destination. Rather, I’m saying that we all seek out fun experiences, and hope to explore some part of the world in our lifetimes. And sometimes that location is more accessible than you think. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller, or someone who just wants to get advice for their next vacation, we’re all on some pursuit of flyness. Isn’t that what brought you to this blog post?
